South Africa to increase its National minimum wage to $260, which is N130k in Nigeria

The South African government has announced plans to increase its National minimum wage from $60 to $260, which is about N130,000 when converted to the Naira. According to Reuters, Deputy President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced this today after holding negotiations with some leaders of the labor unions. He however stated that the new minimum wage regime would take effect from May 2018.
"The balance we have sought to strike is that it must not be too low, so that it doesn't affect the lowest paid workers, but not too high that it leads to massive job losses" Ramaphosa told a news conference.
Ramaphosa said the national minimum wage, which equates to 20 rand ($1.50) per hour, would come into effect in May 2018.

Tanzanian President to security forces: "Target drug traffickers. Even if my wife is involved, arrest her"

Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Monday told security forces in the country to crack down on the drug trade and said no one should be spared, even if the are top politicians, their relatives or even his wife.
His new drive against drugs follows growing concerns tat East Africa is being used by traffickers. While most Europe-bound Afghan heroin still goes through Iran and the Balkans, a spate of record-size hauls near Kenya and Tanzania has raised fears East Africa is seen as an easier route because of porous borders and weak maritime surveillance.

"In this war against narcotics, no one is too prominent to be arrested even if they are politicians, security officers, cabinet ministers or the child of a prominent person,"  Magufuli told the heads of the defence and security forces at the presidential State House.
"Even if my wife, Janeth, is involved, she should be arrested." he added.
Tanzanians have long complained that top officials or those with government connections have often been spared prosecution for corruption and other crimes.

Magufuli has sought to show even those in high office will be held accountable for criminal activity or poor performance. While praising the police chief for suspending 12 junior officers last week on suspicion of drugs trafficking, he however said the campaign must target the financiers and dealers, citing the case of one unnamed drugs trader whose case was taking too long to go through the courts.
"I know some leaders tried to defend him. But we must now start to jail these big drug dealers, instead of just dealing with the little people," the president said.

Twitter announces new features to deal with hateful and abusive content

Today, Twitter announced a new set of features to combat hateful and abusive content. The changes include preventing serial abusers from creating new accounts, a new "safe search" function and blocking potentially abusive and "low-quality" tweets from appearing in conversations.

Twitter's engineering chief Ed Ho,  in a new blog post said,
'Twitter is working on identifying users that have been permanently suspended and prevent them from creating new accounts. This new measure specifically targets "accounts that are created only to abuse and harass others,"  a problem that has long plagued the platform.
The new safe search function prevents tweets that are abusive or from blocked and muted accounts from appearing in users' search results. Those tweets can still be found if people want to see them, but they "won't clutter search results any longer,".
Twitter's decision to hide or collapse abusive content, rather than delete or ban it, is in keeping with its long standing position as a defender of free speech and "people being able to see all sides of any topic," as Ho said at the very top of his post.

Iran and China respond to Trump's tough talk with massive military drills

Iran and China are two countries that top President Trump's enemy list and they are responding to the United State president's tough talk by carrying out elaborate and provocative military drills.

On Friday, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on 25 Iranian individuals and entities supporting the Revolutionary Guards’ ballistic missile program.

This sanction was triggered by an Iranian ballistic missile test that the US said violated a UN Security council resolution which prohibits the launch of missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons. In the case of China, Trump criticized them for devaluing its currency to hurt U.S. imports and building "a massive military complex in the middle of the South China Sea." This attack on China came after China complained about the recent relations between Trump and Taiwan which China considers threatening.
In response to Trump's sanctions and talks, both countries seem to be tightening their defense and security in case they need to defend themselves. Iran conducted military exercises and rolled out new weapons that its leaders said would help national defense, and China tested a new missile following Trump's Twitter assault on Beijing’s expansion in the South China Sea.

Iran's newest weapons; a guided missile, a grenade launcher, a rifle and a pistol, were displayed by Iran's defense minister, Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan, and he warned Washington that Iran will act against any hostile action from the United States.
"If the enemy makes a mistake our roaring missiles will hit their targets," Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Aerospace Force, said during massive air defense drills.
Iran also warned that if attacked by Washington, its missiles would target the U.S. 5th Fleet based in Bahrain, American installations in the Indian Ocean and the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
"These points are all within the range of Iran's missile systems, and they will be razed to the ground if the enemy makes a mistake. And only seven minutes is needed for the Iranian missile to hit Tel Aviv." Mojtaba Zonour, a member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission said.
On their part, China tested a multi-warhead, nuclear-capable missile that has a 600-mile range and can reach targets in Taiwan, Korea and Japan, as well as moving ships at sea. The missile is launched from a mobile pad which makes it hard to find and destroy before launch. The missile’s warhead can adjust its path to strike slow-moving targets and evade anti-missile defenses such as the U.S. Patriot system deployed by Taiwan.
China’s state-controlled media said the U.S. would need to “wage war” to stop China’s access to a series of artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea. The fortified islands are in oil-rich waters that are home to busy shipping lanes and are also claimed by the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Brunei.
